  • CB radios are great tools for communication, but sometimes a high standing wave ratio (SWR) can cause problems. A high SWR can lead to low transmission and reception quality, and in some cases, damage to the radio or the vehicle’s electrical system. In this guide, we’ll show you how to fix high SWR on your CB radio.

Step 1: Check Your Antenna and Cable
The first step is to check your antenna and cable. Make sure your antenna is properly installed and the coaxial cable is not damaged, kinked, or twisted. Check if the antenna is the right length for the frequency band you’re using. Adjusting the length of the antenna can also help to lower the SWR.

    Step 2: Test the SWR
Next, test the SWR with an SWR meter. Connect the meter between the radio and the antenna and follow the instructions to calibrate it. Transmit a signal and take note of the SWR reading. A reading of 1:1 is ideal, but a reading of up to 1.5:1 is acceptable.

    Step 3: Adjust the Antenna
If the SWR is high, you need to adjust the antenna. Lower the SWR by adjusting the length of the antenna or its position. If your antenna has a tunable tip, adjust it by turning the tip until the SWR reading is lower. Keep testing and adjusting until the SWR is satisfactory.

Step 4: Add a Ground Plane
If you still have a high SWR after adjusting the antenna, adding a ground plane can help. A ground plane is a metal surface that reflects the radio signal. You can easily make a ground plane by attaching a metal plate or a set of radials to the base of the antenna.

    Step 5: Double-Check
After you’ve made all the necessary adjustments, double-check your SWR reading to ensure it’s within acceptable limits. If it’s still high, go through the steps again to determine if there’s anything you missed.

Getting a low SWR can improve your CB radio’s performance and prevent damage to your radio or your vehicle’s electrical system. By following these simple steps, you can fix high SWR on your CB radio and enjoy clear communication.
